Haplogroup R1b among Serbs

Virtually all R1b haplogroup among Serbs is made of R1b-M269, the most dominant branch of haplogroup R1b. R1b-M269 occurs in neolith in steppe cultures of Eurasia (primarily Yamna culture), and is closely related to the ethnogenesis of Indo-European populations.

Conditionally speaking, the R1b haplogroup is now divided into eastern and western groups. However, this division is only related to geographical distribution. Some branches of the so-called eastern R1b, such as Z2103, are phylogenetically closer to the western L51> L11, than to the other eastern haplogroups like the PF7562 haplogroup.

Western R1b-L51>L11 branch with the expansion and migration of Indo-Europeans in the Bronze age, through the initial culture of the Bell Beaker people, became the basis of ethnogenesis of the Germanic, Celtic and Italic peoples of Europe.

Eastern group (Z2103, PF7562) participated in the ethnogenesis of some Indo-European Paleobalcanic (Thracians), Anadolian, Caucasian and Central Asian populations (Armenians, Bashkirs, Turkmens).

The percentage of haplogroup R1b among Serbs varies from area to area, but the overall percentage is about 7%. So-called  eastern and western branches of this haplogroup are quite equally represented.
