Haplogroup I2-Y4882 among Serbs

Haplogroup I2-Y4882 is one of the haplogroups of Slavic origin present in the Serbian population. It represents a branch of the haplogroup more commonly known as the I2a Dinaric defined by SNP YP196. The phylogenetic line for the Y4882 looks like this:

I2a-M423>L621>YP196>S17250>Y4882

Age of haplogroup Y4882 is estimated at about 1800 years bp. It developed within the old Slavic populations north of the Carpathians. The initial branches of the Y4882 show greater diversity in the area of today's Poland, so it can be assumed that the haplogroup was formed and initially developed precisely in that area.

Considering the age of this haplogroup, it should not be surprising that today, through its younger branches, it is present in many Slavic peoples: Poles, Ruthenians, Slovaks, Russians, Ukrainians, Belorussians, Serbs, but also some non-Slavic: Hungarians, Germans. As current results show, haplogroup Y4882 is not present in Macedonian Slavs and Bulgarians, Czechs, and individually occurs among Croatians and Slovenians. Only the younger branches of the haplogroup Y4882 can be connected with certain Slavic peoples.

Y4882>Z16969>A7358 Ukrainians, Poles
Y4882>Z16969>A12505 Poles, Swedes

In this way, we could say that the branch Y16473 developed in the Carpathian mountain populations (Gorals, Rusyns), the branch A21222 among the Germans, the branch A10230 among the Poles, and the branch A1328 among the East Slavs and Serbs.

Considering the old Slavic archaeological cultures, the Y4882 primarily can be connected with the Prague-Korchak archaeological culture, with its central parts, in the area of today's southeast of Poland and Subcarpathian regions.

Decorations on belts,  Prague-Korchak Slavic culture

So far, among Serbs, a branch Y4882> Z16969> A1328 was found, with a few positively tested Y4882, who did not perform more specific SNP tests. All positevely tested A1328 individuals are originallly from the Dinaric zone of the Serbian people: one clan from the Upper Lim region, one Krajina clan, and few families from Ozren mountain and Krajina region. At the same time, the haplogroup Y4882, without testing of lower branches, was found in a Serb from Šumadija region, a Catholic from Sinj and Croat from Lika region.

Except for matching of the same home area, it seems that the haplogroup Y4882 had different routes of migrations compared to the phylogenetically close I2-PH908, the most dominant Slavic haplogroup among the Serbs. Even now we can quite sure conclude that the carriers of the haplogroup Y4882 were not in the great mass of the Slavs who moved east, along the Lower Danube, and later settled the eastern and central parts of the Balkan Peninsula. Following the genetic traces, everything indicates that carriers of the Y4882 on the Balkans came across Western Carpathians and the Pannonian Plain. Were they part of a particular Slavic tribe which merged in larger tribal communities, it is difficult to say at this point.

Today's presence of the Y4882 branch among the Serbs is scarce. Although a relatively small number of I2-YP196 haplogroup members among the Serbs were SNP tested, considering the general presence of branches 448 = 20, we can conclude that the percentage of I2-Y4882 among Serbs does not exceed several percent.

Haplogroup R1b among Serbs

Virtually all R1b haplogroup among Serbs is made of R1b-M269, the most dominant branch of haplogroup R1b. R1b-M269 occurs in neolith in steppe cultures of Eurasia (primarily Yamna culture), and is closely related to the ethnogenesis of Indo-European populations.

Conditionally speaking, the R1b haplogroup is now divided into eastern and western groups. However, this division is only related to geographical distribution. Some branches of the so-called eastern R1b, such as Z2103, are phylogenetically closer to the western L51> L11, than to the other eastern haplogroups like the PF7562 haplogroup.

Western R1b-L51>L11 branch with the expansion and migration of Indo-Europeans in the Bronze age, through the initial culture of the Bell Beaker people, became the basis of ethnogenesis of the Germanic, Celtic and Italic peoples of Europe.

Eastern group (Z2103, PF7562) participated in the ethnogenesis of some Indo-European Paleobalcanic (Thracians), Anadolian, Caucasian and Central Asian populations (Armenians, Bashkirs, Turkmens).

The percentage of haplogroup R1b among Serbs varies from area to area, but the overall percentage is about 7%. So-called  eastern and western branches of this haplogroup are quite equally represented.

Krajina family Vučković (The Patron Saint St Nicholas) 2/2

(continuation)
However, for Vučković family from Dabar, there is no tradition of the origin from Dalmatia (apart from a short stay in Skradin), but, according to what was written by Gavro Vučković, the awareness of the common origin with the Vučković family from Bjelaj/Dalmatia was preserved. For the Runjo/ Runjić family in Grahovo and Unac is said to have originated from the Vučković family from Polača. From their original area in Grahovo, they migrated to Unac, Bjelajsko Polje, Sanica.
The only Vučković family from Polača have done Y-DNA genetic tests. The connections between various branches of Vučković family and related surnames, for which there is a basis in tradition and sources, can only be confirmed through genetic testing.

Certainly the most vivid personality among the members of this family was Gavro Vučković Krajišnik (1830 - 1875), a merchant and representative of the Bosnian Serbs in Constantinople, man of a resourceful and restless nature, in an eternal opposition to the Serbian Sarajevo city circles and Phanariot bishops, attacked by Prečani Serbs correspondents as Turkish friend and tax collector, on the other hand, the savior of many Serbs from Turkish dungeons, renovator of monasteries and churches, and a tireless fighter for the national cause. He left several works, which are, in fact, polemical writings, his defense and a autobiography, in which his living, rebellious character comes out to the forefront. When the intrigues of the Phanariots became successful, and when Gavro from Sarajevo was sent to Asia imprisonment, we see him how, even in faraway Beirut, finds out his old friends, Turkish sipahis, who trying to soften the inconvenient position in which he found himself. Using this position, Gavro managed to escape to the Russian consulate in Alexandria, and then through the Russian ships come to Belgrade. With the outbreak of the uprising in 1875, Gavro attempted to reach the Krajina through Gradiška, but fails, and the same year he dies. Ivo Andrić and Petar Kočić wrote a lot about Gavro Vučković, as well as a large number of contemporary authors.

Krajina family Vučković (The Patron Saint St Nicholas) 1/2

One of the notable Krajina families in the 19th century was family Vučković from the village Dabar in Podgrmeč region. As with other Krajina families, their fate was marked by migrations, rebellions and sufferings. When a plague broke out in Bosnia and Herzegovina at the end of the 18th century, Todor and Milica Vučković from the village of Dabar with their children found temporary shelter in Skradin, Dalmatia. One of the sons, Špiro, later monastic Sylvester, then stayed in Dalmatia to "learn the book", served as a priest in Skradin, and at one time was the administrator of the Dalmatian Orthodox diocese. The names of the other sons we find in writings of Gavro Vučković Krajišnik: "My uncle was the deceased Silvester Vučković, the deceased priest Kosta Vučković and the deceased Mihailo, the father of priest Damian Vučković in Dabar." To this list of brothers could be added  Gavro's father, merchant Filip Vučković, who in the first half of the 19th century moved from Dabar to Petrovac, as its first Orthodox resident. Gavro's cousin was Todor Vučković later monastic Dionysius, hegumen of the Gomionica monastery and father of one of the wealthiest Serbs of Dalmatia, the Split merchant and banker Konstantin Kosta Vučković. Matica Srpska in Dubrovnik was established from the legacy of Kosta Vučković. We find the aforementioned priest Damian Vučković, son of Mihailo, as a Dabar village priest in the 1882 schematism of the Orthodox Metropolitanate of Dabar-Bosna. In this way, by comparing data from various sources, we have learned the genealogy of this influential and diverse Serbian family from Dabar.

Vučković family, with the Patron Saint St Nicholas, live in a  several villages of Podgrmeč-Bjelaj region, but their connection with the Vučković family from Dabar is not entirely clear. Gavro Vučković, commenting on the family relationship with Simeta Vučković  from the village Bravsko, writes: "Simeta and Stana to be called a clan like myself, but he is not my uncle ... And there is Simeta in Bravsko ..." This Vučković statement could be understood as a confirmation of the connection between the Vučković family from the Dabar and Bjelaj.
Based on tradition, Vučković family settled in Bjelajsko polje, Bravsko (Kapljuv), in the second half of the 18th century, from the Dalmatian villages Ervenik and Oton. Vučković family with the Patron Saint St Nicholas still lives in Ervenik, so it seems that tradition is correct. From the village of Bravsko, one branch of Vučković family moved to the villages of the parish of Krnjeusa, where they were also numerous. In Založje village near Bihac, for the Karakaš family, it is stated that they came "from Bjelajsko Polje where they called Vučković", and for Vučković family in Lipa near Bihać it is stated that they came "before the occupation from Sana".
Since the villages of Oton and Ervenik were inhabited by the population from Bjelajsko Polje region at the end of the 17th century, migration of Vučković family into Bjelajsko polje in the 18th century could have been a return migration. In addition to Ervenik, Vučković family with the Patron Saint of St Nicholas were quite numerous in Dalmatian village Polača near Knin. Fr. Nakićenović states for the Vučković family in Polača that they are the immigrants from Bosnia. The census from 1701 actually lists two Vucko's sons in Polaca, and it is unclear whether the surname originated at that time, or the Turkish "son of Vučko" can be understood as the last name Vučković. A few years later, in the census of 1709, five Vučković households were recorded in Ervenik, and among them is also mentioned the personal name Vučko. There remains an open question about the relationship between the Vučković families in Ervenik and Polača. ( to be continued)
